Thanks to all of you who have helped so far... but I am still not set on a course of action. Here is the scoop of my apparently terrible financial decision...
Thought I would simplify and buy a cheap old car for transportation and sell my spiffy beautiful 328i sport. Buddy drove and recommended a 1991 saab 900. Car had 163000 miles but a new clutch 9-05. Paid way too much for car in my opinion now... $2300. Got it home and find problems abound!
I need a new tranny (as many posters know) and the best price I have been able to find is around $2000 for rebuilt tranny and installation by a guy who has been working on saabs forever and has 15 years experience at a dealership. In addition to the tranny... I need two new rear calipers (because of the freakn hand brake mechanism), repair of a hole in the drivers floor (pa doesnt pass inspection if any rust through the car), and to at least repack... if not replace the passenger's CV and inner drive. Think I have some suspension issues in the rear... but nothing requiring immediate remedy.
Other wise the car seems to be in good shape. The ineterior is clean and respectable... paint is decent with no significant body rust (except for floor mentioned). Engine seems to run strong (check engine light one time after a 4.5 hour trip for a few minutes) but does seem to idle a touch heavy.
My dilemma is... Ive spent too much already for the car in my estimation... as is and am looking at having to spend quite a bit more (probably $2500-3000). That would mean I would have almost $5000 in this car that is probably "worth" $2000 when I am done. Do I put the money in it and hope it is a good car for 2-3 years... or do I get out now anyway I can. Should I be concerned about other big expenses... or rest assured that I have a car that will most likely last me a number of years. Is it a risky gamble to put more money into this thing? I am just so unsure... and go back and forth so many times! Im frustrated at the guy that sold it too me... but more so at myself for making this apparent "mistake". Im financially tight right now... anticipating a move... and would like to get out of my current car payment for something less expensive... does this 900 seem like a good option still? Thanks for any and all thoughts! I cant make up my mind and dont want to make more mistakes right now that cost me! Best wishes all!
