If you are just starting to get whine, I would not worry about it right now. Pinion bearing whine can spell instant disaster, or years of trouble-free service. The transmission in my 86 900S did 40,000 miles with a whining pinion bearing and it never got any worse or caused any problems... the car was in an accident, so who knows how long it would have lasted. My 85 900T did at least 30,000 miles with a whining bearing - I bought it whining, and drove it until the problems started happening.
My advice is drive it until the whining gets loud enough you get afraid, or until it starts popping out of gear. Be sure you're ready to deal with it right then and there, 'cause when it starts popping out you'll start doing damage to the internals relatively quickly. Until then, it's probably very rebuildable. On a 900S, especially one you don't plan on beating the crap out of, you may go a very long time - I've heard of folks driving 70,000+ miles on dying pinion bearings and *still* rebuilding them.
