To all... thank you for your thoughts. The rust issue will be looked at tonight and tomorrow! Justin... thought I would clarify... $2000 was the whole job... pull of old tranny and install of rebuild.... so it puts it in the market. I actually talked to Claude at Tired Iron Repair in upstate NY. AWESOME guy! He was a cool dude to talk to and went through some options with me. I thought about taking the car up to him. He has rebuilds for $1250 which is reasonable... and he said he could put it in for half of what I had been quoted... which would mean he could put it in for ~$400... seems like a steal if he can do that! There is cost in taking it up there... but I liked the guy and now he comes recommended! Goldwing and Andrews are on my list to contact... but think that they are going to be in the same ballpark as Eriksson. Eriksson has rebuilds for $1500 plus $120 for round trip shipping!
Then there are the other issues mentioned here... head gasket, timing chain... and other odds and ends that can go bad. I dont have a reliable history of the maintenance... and by the condition of the CV joint... a simple fix relatively.. Im going to assume that the head gasket has not been replaced. That seems like a very expensive labor intenseive fix though... and there is no advantage to doing that when the engines out because it can be done with the engine in right... how about the timing chain... thats an engine in fix too isnt it!
Well... thanks again... to all! Still reading, calling, wringing my hands, sweating... and trying to absorb another financial hit! Best wishes all!
