When you lose ignition, the engine misses - this is a relatively violent event, and the engine bangs a bit. Yes, not igniting the fuel will result in a rich mixture and the resultant code. But you do mention that it will barely rev. That can be the AMM. A bad AMM can cause the engine to dump fuel in, causing the engine to stumble badly.
It's tough to tell the difference between ignition cutting out and a sudden over-rich mixture. Id' say ignition cut out is pretty harsh, whereas running over-rich is more like engine stumbling - still not pretty, but not as violent. I'd check the plugs - if they look like you've been running rich, I'd suspect the AMM. And frankly, AMM failures are a LOT more common than coil problems.
