Thanks Ari.
I have not checked the plugs but will do it next time I have the problem. I thought my wires looked pretty new when I replaced the rest of the ignition stuff, but in retrospect they seemed a bit dry where they plug into the distributor cap so I'll replace them too.
The trouble codes only pop up when the problem happens. Sometimes it will do more than just hiccup. A couple of times the engine has cut out repeatedly and then lost power. When I push on the gas it will barely rev up and I can see black smoke coming out the tail pipe. Between stumbles (which can be up to a week!) no codes are generated (I always clear them). I was thinking that when the ignition drops out, the cylinders probably flood. Then, when the ignition comes back online maybe there's excess fuel in the engine and the rich codes pop up? Long shot?
