the only reason i mentioned the axle being tac welded is because of what you went through with hitting the spindle (mushing it all up and still it not moving.)clean the inside of the hub/to axle and look for the tac weld.

the wheel bearing can take many many whacks of a 50 pound sludge and still be fine found this out by installing the bearing,
and took the bearing apart to see just how it is put together.
the physical make up of the bearing can hold the hole wait of the car and be fine.
when the wheel bearing is placed into the knuckle there is a c-clip on the back side of the knuckle (or with in)that allows the bearing to slide in to a predetermined space allowed by the positioning of the c-clip.
so no matter how hard the bearing is hit or pressed it will not go beyond the clip. then a c-clip is placed in the knuckle on the outer side of the wheel bearing so the bearing is unable to slide back out, then the hub shaft is pressed into the bearing. no damage is done to the wheel bearing even tough the press ia using 1500/lb to press the hub with in the bearing.
your going to hit the spindle with approximately 1000 lb in a instance,
the wheel bearing will be fine.

but if the hub is tac welded to the shaft the spindle will keep taking damage and no progress will be made, use gas or mineral spirits (paint thinner) or a degreaser product to find if the weld is there.
only reason i can think of, as to why someone would do this would perhaps be,.... they lost the axle nut at one time.... i really don't have any idea, people tend to be strange.

what im thinking is, seeing how you disassembled the hole side of the car, why wouldn't one put a new wheel bearing in. just because it (right there)

seeing how the spindle is off and the back of the axle is out take the hole knuckle with axle and all down to your nearest Indy, sport them a hundred fifty buxs and say pull the wheel bearing and ill come pick up the pieces, and order one from eeuroparts, (35 buxs for a wheel bearing)
and free shipping id you get two, what could be better.

but if the bearing is somewhat new the sludge would not hurt it in anyway.
i could guarantee it, seeing how i took it apart to see just how it all works in there. its amazing little invention
