After reading all the posts, and considering where you live (snow country with salty roads at times), I can see rust being the sole reason why you can't seperate them. Now with the spindle assembly and axle removed, I'm hard pressed to avoid thinking that if you can somehow mount the spindle so it is backed solidly, that some sharp blows with a heavy sledge won't force the axle to move. So as to avoid damage to the threads, screw the nut down flush, plus something metal placed over that. Then go medieval.
