Totally agreed with all of that... in more c900s than I can count, I've seen perhaps two bad heater cores, even after serious over-heating. I'd start with a full cooling system flush and thermostat replacement, and see where that gets you. If you find that the heater core or heater control valve does in fact have a leak, the 30 minutes of extra labor to drain the cooling system again is not a great deal of money.
That said, $900 is a little high for a new heater core and the three or four hours of labor to install it, but not all that much. I'd be very inclined to install a used core from a slightly younger car - they rarely go bad, and installing a good used part will probably save quite a bit of money and not hurt the longevity of the repair in any tangible way. I would NOT install a used valve - those do go bad, and new is the only way to go.
