Amelia,
That transmission problem could very well be just a maladjustment or defect in the shift linkage. There is a semi-flexible element in the linkage just on the engine side of the firewall and it can develop slop causing poor shift control. Basically, there is a rod which goes from the shift lever to the semi-flexible element and then another rod from the element to the transmission. If the element breaks down (it's partly rubber) the shift lever doesn't communicate with the transmission properly. Replacing that element is a small job for a Saab guy with a lift. There is also the adjusting of the relationship of the two rods and that is done by loosening and relocating the semi-flexible element, yours could even just be loose. A bad motor mount can cause poor shift control also so before you lose faith in your transmission have some of those other things checked by a good Saab independent mechanic.
Finding a leak in the cooling system is usually as simple as connecting a special hand pump to the reservoir, pressurizing the system a little and seeing if coolant squirts out anywhere or the gauge on the pump drops. Most Saab indy's have that pump and adapter. It's very unlikely that your heat exchanger is bad but the heater valve (right at the heat exchanger) can spring a leak and need replacement. It will pee anti-freeze on your right foot. Experienced Saab guys get good at replacing those efficiently.
Two of the most important things to do with a C900 Saab are; Don't let the engine overheat (keep your fans in good working order) and change the engine oil every 3,000 miles (and don't let it get low). These engines typically go over 200,000 miles if well maintained and not badly overheated (that can warp and crack the head). The manual tranny will eventually develop significant leaks too (all of which are pretty easy to fix) and you don't want to drive with that low on oil either. Good luck, C900s are among the best built cars I've ever worked on or owned.
