WOW! You all are very friendly and cool. Thanks!
Ok. I know just a little over nothing about cars beyond having dated and had a very close friend or 2 who are car experts. I bought my 900 Saab Convertible from a close friend who has put massive work into it himself.
That being said, I live in Brooklyn and haven't had ANY car for over 6 years. Any and all tools I once owned have been pilfered out of storage back home in Kentucky. I'm kind of in love with my car, even though I am now realizing it needs a LOT of work done. (synchro is off for 3rd and often times when I've put the car in reverse I have to roll it forward a foot or so to be able to get into a driving gear again, assuming that is synchro problem as well???).
Am I totally insane to be considering getting the manual and investing in a tool kit? I live on a fairly quiet block and there is some open space at the end of my block under the elevated highway...... but I do not have any sort of garage space to work in.
Clearly I am not going to be putting in a new transmission or anything, but I'd like to do some of the trouble shooting and just get familiar with my car.
Thanks for your information, everyone. I'll probably just be able to get the car towed to the next mechanic (Who I saw some glowing reviews about here -Roland at Swedish Auto Repair in Bklyn-and who already confirmed my suspicions about the other guy when he said that it seemed unlikely that the core was toast).
I think that I might have taken on more than I realized when I bought this car to bring up here to NYC. It is one thing to have it in Kentucky where I know many people who can work on cars and have the space to do it. Breaking down in a busy NY intersection and having a cop yell at you over a megaphone is pretty humiliating and nervewracking.
So, you all will probably be seeing a LOT of me, I look forward to learning about my Saab, and I appreciate the lack of snobbery!!!
xoxo
