Jonathan:

I just had the same exact issue this week. As a matter of fact I posted
my problem here as well. I just replaced the entire clutch mechanism last
week back here in New England. Last weekend we had warm weather, so everything was running fine over 30 degrees but then on Monday nite, I could not shift down into first gear and yet that was the exact reason why
I went to the Saab Dealer in the first place. The weather had turned colder, and when I shifted into what I thought was first gear I could not,
but that was better than the week before because I could not shift into first, second or third gear. So, off again to have the car taken by tow truck back to the Saab Dealer again. Apparently, the shift mechanism was leaking and oil was all over place below the shift rod, one of the rubber
gaskets had gone bad. Now, I am talking with you still driving the courtesy car they gave me and I insisted that the Manager of the Saab dealership drive it home 50 miles and drive it back to work 50 miles before I will pick it up. According to him the car shifting issue is fine
now that they replaced the rubber gasket below the shift rod.

So, that is my story, and I will find out Saturday if they are right. I am getting sick of this issue. Especially now that I have spent close to 1300 for a new clutch and another 400 for this other service on a car that
might be worth 1000 dollars. We have cold and warm weather up in New England this time of year but if you want my opinion keep that car as a good second car. You'll need it once you get another Saab (which we are all addicted to) and you have another breakdown issue with your new Saab.
That way you will at least save some money over the long term. I don't think these 5 speed 900 Saabs were designed correctly with their transmissions. Obviously, something was not designed correctly.

Charles
