Keep poking around here, there are many great postings with step-by-step instructions. The job I did was with rebuilt axles - they consist of everything from the inner tripod bearing (inner joint?), including a new boot, out through the outer cv joint (all assembled & sealed with new boot) through to the splined shaft that fits through the hub. I also had new bearings pressed in while the steering swivel member was out. I found everything came apart very nicely on my car ('93 900S). I didn't even need to tap on the axle to extract the swivel, and the ball joints slid out of the control arms pretty well too.
I started by studying the appropriate sections in Bently, and then filling in the gaps here. Also found some good info on thesaabsite (in fact they say they don't carry rebuilt axles for the reasons noted here, and recommend rebuilding yourself. Next time...)
