The Haynes manual is not worth waiting for for this job. It omits virtually everthing related to the internals of the transmissions, both auto and manual. If you want to do this, invest $35 in the SAAB automatic manual. Even Erikkson recommends this as better than the ZF ($150) for most mechnaics.
Robert Kaplan pointed out that the governor seals are also a possibility. I forgot in my original posting that they can also are included as a subsystem that be accessed without having to remove the transmission.
However, the diagositic of manually shifting to determine if this is a root cause is only suggestive of one subsystem that can cause this type of behavior. The first one-way clutch that is buried deep in the transmission can also be overcome by this procedure. I would consider looking at these seals as part of an overall attempt to do what you can without tearing down the unit.
