Yet another A/C compressor question

The compressor on my '88 9kt (257,000 miles) died a smoky death a couple of weeks ago. It's a Sanden. My shop says about $1000 - $1200 to fix. New compressor, receiver/dryer, clean out the system, recharge etc.
1. What are my options to do this for a more reasonable price? I know rebuilt compressors are available for about $200, but is this a possible DIY? I guess if I could find an A/C shop willing to install customer supplied parts that would be one way to save some bucks. I figure I can replace the compressor and receiver/dryer but I would need the pros to clean out the system, recharge it and leak test. I would also need to first get the R12 purged before I did anything in order to keep EPA happy.
2. Whatever route I go, I also need to decide whether to recharge with R12 or R406a. 406a is cheaper, does not require any system mods and is supposed to put out colder air than R12. Anyone have experience with 406a? R134 is NOT an option.
Thanks,
-Chuck
