R-134a vs. R-406a

I sort of figured if the compressor burned up the refrigerant is gone anyway. Guess I'll just start unbolting parts and look for a rebuilt compressor. I'll give all the hoses a thorough inspection and get new seals.
I know a few people that went the "cheapo" route on an R-134a conversion (no A/C component retrofits) and they all have reported they essentially have little or no A/C when the temps get above 95 or so (all too often this summer in the DC area). R-134a is not as efficient as R-12 and just does not appear to work well on a system originally designed for R-12. The one BIG benefit of 134a is any mortal can walk in to Pep Boys or Wal-Mart and buy it. It appears just about anything else you need a special permit to buy.
I have a BIG can of R-22 that an HVAC contractor left in my basement several years ago. I've always been told R-22 is a no-no in auto A/C but don't know exactly why.
Pat Goss from the Motorweek show on PBS does a weekend radio show here in the DC area. He claims R-406a is the ONLY way to go if replacing R-12. However, that's only one person's opinion and I don't personally know anyone who has used the stuff. If I could buy it off the shelf I'd give it a try but it appears I'll need to go to a shop to get a 406a charge on my repaired A/C.
