Your buddies that went the cheapo route may be buying new compressors before the end of the summer. They undoubtedly have air in the system, which is why they are not getting cooling when it's hot.
I was not aware that you need EPA certification to buy Autofrost. Even if you do, you can take the test online for less than $20 and get the certificate. The bigger problem with this stuff are the equipment requirements. At a bare minimum, you will need a vacuum pump, gauges and Autofrost charging hose/adapters. If you found it on the shelf, you could not just give it a shot yourself without the tools.
I saw a motorweek last summer where the guy was pumping an alternative refrigerant. I thought it was Freeze 12, but it could have been autofrost. I specifically remember that to charge, it was necessary to have this special electric blanket to heat the tank so that the refrigerant could be pushed into the system under vacuum. Which is getting into the realm of additional special tools.
I believe R-22 has boiling and condensing points that are not quite right for auto airconditioning. Which is where I think the blends make the difference.
Unless you want to roll down the windows, you have 3 choices. The two big options are spend some money on tools and a LOT of time educating yourself, or break out the wallet. Some people here have found a middle ground by buying and installing the parts themselves (including flushing and adding liquid oil) and having a shop vacuum and charge. Maybe this is the way for you to go. You may not get is right the first time, but it will be cheaper than having a shop do everything even if you have to do it twice. You will still need a compressor, drier and expansion valve.
