As Roman says, we had no idea that we were dealing with a burned valve until the head was off.
After puzzling over an ostensibly intact head gasket, a close examination of the head revealed that about 15% of the face had melted off of an exhaust valve. Roman hyperbolized a bit to suggest that the valve "broke in half."
I would absolutely replace all of the chain guides, and probably the chains too. I don't think you'll need new tensioners. Although I replaced both of mine, I would have been completely comfortable reusing the old ones if I hadn't bought two new ones already.
My balance chain crankshaft sprocket was a little worn, and obviously I planned on replacing it either way. I deemed the sprockets on the balance shafts themselves (and the idler sprocket) to be perfectly fine. I really couldn't see any significant wear at all. Replace them at your discretion. (BTW: When Ronam [Ronam..HA!] said "crank sprocket" he was referring to the balance sprocket. All the timing sprockets were flawless.)
When Roaman and I did this job, we were working in a cold, dirty, poorly lit shitbox of a warehouse space, with my limited set of tools, and a total lack of experience with major engine work. As you can imagine, this made the job seem much bigger than it really was.
With the facilities you have at your disposal, and your anticipation of valve damage, I think you will find the job to be quite manageable. Although it's very involved, it's not really all that difficult.
I'll post again if I think of anything else. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Good luck Chad!
