I not going to get this completely right, but according to my Saab indy alot of my performance issues are due to the balance shaft chain apparently hitting the timing cover, which is being picked up by the knock sensor. He said "its never going to run right until we deal with the balance shaft chain."
He recommends removal as opposed to replacement of the chain because the additional vibration is minimal (though can vary a bit from car to car) and the cost of parts and additional labor involved in replacement aren't justified by the limited benefit derived from the balance shafts particularly considering my 9k is an 11 year old car ('93 CSE turbo). According to my indy the majority opinion is removal of the chain.
A search of the board indicates that only one person was dissatisfied with the effects of the removal the chain, and considering the difference in cost between the two procedures I'm inclined to follow my indy's advice. Of course, I'm here to get more information and the board's valued opinion on the subject.
Thanks for the information and any additional thoughts you may have.
