I removed the balance chain for the first time a couple of weeks ago on a NG900 engine.
I cannot feel any difference in vibrations.
The savings was about $500.00 parts and labor for the customer.
My other statement here may sound like an oxymoron when writing, do it the "right way" when allowing myself to do this alteration.
My feelings though about those balance shaft setup is that it came from a bunch of engineers/product designers that just had to come up with something new to stand out in the crowd.
The popular beleive is that 4 cyl engine over 2.0L have a tendency to vibrate.
What about the B23 and B230 engines in the Volvos from 84 to 95, no noticable vibrations.
Actually, they did a feverish attempt to install auxillary balance shafts on the outside of engine block for some years (B234 16Valve) but that failed miserably and created an engine where the whine from the balance shaft belt was horrible and the overall noise from engine was more than the proven B230.
I would have had NO complains about the balance shaft setup beeing there IF they had used strong parts that doesn't wear out.
First it is the hardening process of lower sprocket that failed in the early 9000, then it is the worn out balance shaft sprockets (intake or exhaust) in the NG900 up to at least 97.
And this has nothing to do with lack of oil changes. Most engines I have taken apart were "clean as a whistle" inside but the sprockets were trashed.
