I also am meticulous in the care and maintenance of my cars, but the benefit derived from replacing the balance shaft chain and related components appears minimal based on my Saab indy and other research. Any additional vibration imparted by the removal of the chain is in most circumstances slight. I don't believe that this slight additional vibration, if any, is going to contribute to additional wear of other components. That's not even why the balance shafts were put in to begin with.

As Swedecar noted the savings can be $500 and more, and I think this money will be much better spent on other repair and maintenance (like the Sachs Sport Chassi suspension kit I'm putting in). You are correct that my 9k is of an age and condition that it needed a fair amount of work. Fuel pump, fan blower, rotors and other repairs were done shortly before I bought the car. Since I've owned it (7 months) I've done the 125K service (10K miles early), replaced the upper motor mount, heater core, O2 sensor, front and rear brakes, left and right CV boots, bypass valve (Viggen version), adjusted the kickdown (may need to be replaced or the occasional thumpy 3/4 shift is the accumulator springs), put in all new vacuum hoses, new battery and cleaned all grounds, and replaced the ACC control unit and cabin sensor(and probably a couple of things I've lost track off).

I think I'm almost done "restoring" this car and the balance shaft chain and suspension (thus the Sport Chassi kit) are my last issues. Certainly appreciate your's and other's feedback, but don't think that not replacing the balance shaft chain is shortchanging the maintanence and care of my 9k.
