I'm not positive but I think where one would really notice the difference is at highway speeds. I think these are the vibrations and harshness that were targeted by the balance shafts as opposed to at idle. I know there was quite a difference between my 89 2.0 non-turbo (no balance shafts) and my parents' 92 non-turbo at 75-85!
Again, I'm not one with experience with a BS-ectomy. Last rebuild I undertook was due to a BS-sourced timing chain failure, and only the crank sprocket was bad on the BS drive. The other three sprockets were fine. If you're already replacing the timing chain I don't see where $500 extra comes in, even if replacing all the sprockets and BS gadgetry.
To me, if I'm in there, I'm doing what needs doing. With a proper rebuild, it's a one-time deal unless you're keeping the car for 500,000 miles. But on the other hand I can well understand why someone else might opt out of the BS ...er, bs...
Perhaps someone without BS chains could weigh in with their experience?
