As you ratchet up the kind of driving you do, the 9K *can* do with some improvement. As I put more miles on mine (have had it since last fall), I realize that for normal quick driving, say 25 mph over the posted limit on back roads, it is OK. Not great ,but OK, and still plenty of fuun. As you begin to push it in corners, so you get a lot closer to the limit of adhesion with the road, the stock 9K (at least in a non-Aero) is not all it could be. I driven enough high speed autocrosses (70 moh +) in both race and road cars to appreciate the differences.
However, the 9K has a very tunable chassis, except for being constrained by the solid rear axle. Springs, shocks, bars, bushings all can be swapped as can brakes, as George has noted.
But I don't think the 9K requires undue force to get the most out of the braking. A weak booster or old rubber lines will decrease brake feel and increase the amount of pressure needed to get the binders to work. I would like better brakes, but they don't fall into the "lousy" category, like those on a lot of domestics and Japanese cars, IMHO.
