I did cheat and read your post to Aussie Pete too...! I refrained from becoming involved in this thread before now, because of the juvenile/rich-kid-with-BMW-paid-for-by-daddy-trust-fund/ricer/generally unpleasant tone of much this. I love my 9000 and want to keep it for as long as I possibly can feasibly keep it, I find it difficult to imagine a car that offers the all around practicality, performance, comfort, handling, safety, style (perhaps somewhat subjective), reliablilty (touch wood) and value for money, that my modestly modified 9000 offers. But, even when the car was a stock 170 hp, the brakes were the one area that I felt really could have been better from the factory. I was amazed when I learned that the mighty Aero came equipped with the same anchors. 280 mm is not a very large rotor on a car weighing close to two tons with a driver and three passengers, and capable of 150 mph.

I love my car, but I am not so blinkered as to think that it is flawless. Part of the issue with the brakes is perception - they don't inspire as much confidence as what they actually deliver merits. Hence, the fact that they are 'pretty decent' (IMHO) appears to be 'lousy'.

Some people here have posted about using front pads from the E30 BMW M3 on the front of a 9000. They require minor machining in order to fit, but it is apparently pretty easy, and makes a significant difference. Because I don't want to deal with the refinement issues that go along with drilled or slotted rotors, I will buy a plain set of Zimmermans, and probably put Ferodo M3 pads on front, with Textars on the rear. I would go Ferodo all round, but Ferodo recently discontinued 9000 pads.

Like Zeke said, tires make a very big difference in braking. If BMW released the 325 with crappy tires, and the 330 with super sticky borderline autocross tires, then the 330 will do much better in a braking test, even with identical brake and suspension hardware, and MORE weight to stop. Tires, suspension, brake hardware, load, local road conditions (things beyond our control like the nature of the stone used for the road surfacing - some stone offers more grip than others) will all affect braking performance. A formula ford will offer great braking, if you can modulate the pedal without ABS and press it hard enough without a servo, in the first place.
