IF and this is a big IF, you can go through the car and address all the known weakenesses, fix all the stuff that's older or likely to die, you might be OK. But that means:
DI & plugs
All motor mounts
Thermostat
Heater core
Heater blower motor
Probably the trans mount
Give it new brake pads and rotors all around
New plugs, filters, etc.,
Change ALL the fluids
Change ALL the light bulbs
Serp belt, pulleys and tensioner
All heater hoses
All vacuum hoses
Put in synthetic motor oil (then you can change it 2X/year when she is home from school)
Then maintain it religiously, you might be OK. But then, you have an auto trans to worry about. Still, at least you eliminate all the stuff that is known to fail. And your daughter has to be responsible enough to check oil, coolant, etc.
My daughters both love Saabs, and my 9K is great, but I'd be inclined to put the eldest (now driving) in something else if I'm not around to deal with it. And no, she can't have *my* 9K.
IMHO the Asian cars, although they are ultra-reliable, aren't safe in an accident, For the amount you'd pay for the 9K, I'd be inclined to put the kiddo in a used Taurus. They are safe, resonably reliable, parts are cheap and you can get them fixed anywhere. I've put a lot of miles on Tauruses and Sables (rentals) and almost bought one once. They aren't Saabs, but they aren't bad transportation.
