another idea that might be worth putting some thought into is a mid 90's brick (i.e. Volvo). Very similar sweedish safety and reliability. They have similar cargo areas minus the hatchback-ability. Volvo automatics are more reliable than saabs. an 850 will run you very similar pricing compared to a same year 9000.
Honestly, i had two car totaling experiences this past year. I had some bad luck with getting hit by people who didn't deem it appropriate to pay attention to road rather than cell phone or radio...but i digress. First one was highway speed into jersey barrier...passenger needed a few stiches, and i walked away. Was in Saab 900t. A couple of weeks later i was in my newly bought used accord, and got hit by 17 year old kid who swerved into oncoming traffic...car totaled, and again i walked away. The difference of speeds was 70+mph in saab and only about 20-25mph in honda. I was more injured in honda, to be honest...and wouldn't buy one again. check out the 'saabs save lives' section of this website...
sorry for the rambling message...
