I'll remember that for the (hopefully never) next time. I'd second the recommendation to leave the piston crowns alone. It's too easy to get debris down along the cylinder walls and mess up the rings. It's very tempting, and the carbonized deposits on the piston crown probably increase your compression ratio and could theoretically become hotspots for preignition, but you gotta just say no.
As I said in my post below, I followed some bad advice to hone the cylinder walls, and now that engine is in a junkyard. It burned a quart of oil about every tankful after that. I had also cleaned my piston crowns, so I did a double bad thing. Honing should only be done on a complete engine rebuild when there has been overboring, and I am convinced it should be done only by a fully equipped machine shop. I used a device from an auto parts store that mounts on a drill. I will admit, sheepishly, that the original factory honing marks were clearly visible on my cylinder walls at about 130K miles, and I honed them anyway. Bad, bad idea. Very expensive. Lots of kicking self.
