Yaofeng here told me about finding TDC by looking at the crank pully for the key that holds it on. When the crank pulley key is "up" and the No. 1 cylinder is at the top is 'TDC'. The crank pulley and key is visible from above.
As far as I know, there are no timing marks on the flywheel.
As far as turning the engine by hand, you may try a socket on the crank pulley or a long screwdriver on the starter ring (if it's accessible???). Once the plugs are out (no compression) she should turn easy by hand. When the head comes off, you can probably turn it by pressing on the pistons with your hand (except at TDC and BDC).
Valve seals and valves themselves should be in great shape at your mileage. I had my seals replaced at 180K just because I was in there already and they're really cheap. The machine shop recommended doing a valve job, too, but the shop said the valves were pretty clean to begin with. Doing valve seals yourself would be easy with a valvespring compressor.
When the head is off, you'll want to take it to a machine shop and get it cleaned, checked for cracks, and milled just enough to get a true flat surface - don't take off any more than necessary. These operations require dissassembly of the head and replacement of valve seals at this point is no extra cost (labor-wise). I think my head work came to a total of $600. It was $150 for cleaning and checking for cracks, and $450 for the valve job, and $12 for making 2 old head bolts into alignment pins.
When you get your head back, it will be essentially brand new - you know it is crack-free and flat - and looks great!
Good luck,
Ludwig
