Car:
96 Aero Blk on Blk, SQR stage 4, 3 “ JT from turbo back.
History:
After three years of driving around with an expired inspection sticker due to a “CEL” light I decided to bring it a reputable saab indi familiar with my upgrades. Initially was showing a code for the rear o2 sensor and the mechanic tells me now showing a code for front sensor. He seems to think the exhaust manifold might have a leak and I should also point out there is a new cheap 50 dollar cat from europarts and there are no leaks in the rest of the exhaust system. After disconnecting battery and clearing codes the “CEL’ returns about 20 to 30 miles later. In closer inspection of the exhaust manifold gasket while engine is cold and tolerances are at there largest, I decided to take a strip of small paper and pass it close to every area where the manifold meets the cylinder head and noticed no movement of the paper what’s so ever. I also don’t hear the typical sound when there is a leak in this area nor did I noticed any soot type of residue in any are of the manifold and all the studs are there. I’m getting ready to try and tackle this myself by getting a tech II to read the codes and monitor both o2’s. Research tells me that the rear o2 signal is normal at about .5 volts and not at .2 or .9 as an example, and that the heater circuit should have a 12 volt signal with an approximate resistance of 30 ohms. I don’t know what values to look for in the front o2; I also understand that these values could be correct as the o2 sensors only respond to incorrect actions of other controllers/sensors within the fuel and ignition system which I’m somewhat familiar with. My car seems to exhibit acceptable MPGs, 20+ in the city around 30 in highway so it seems that the EFI computer is having to compensate very little to make up for the problem. As I mentioned before my primary interest is obtaining a Massachusetts inspection sticker, which brings me to my last question: While researching the subject I came across o2 simulators both for signal and heater circuits. Do these really work? How do you think I should proceed in my current situation?
Thank You,
Fernando
