opinion but is also switched on sometimes during normal operation whenever the O2 sensor switching rate falls below a certain pre-determined rate (and a couple of other parameters). A slower switching rate usually indicates that the exhaust temp is below the O2's optimum temperature range. If the heating process does not produce the desired result (faster switching O2 sensor) after a number of attempts/tries then it is counted as a failure. This does not yet trip the light because if during the next trip the heating does produce the desired result, the counter is reset after a number of consecutive “passings”. Keep all of this in mind with the next piece of info... Increasing the cross sectional area of the pipe results in a decrease of the velocity of the gas flow and consequently the sampling rate now either borderlines the threshold and crosses it randomly and depending on the tolerances. Also, the exhaust temp is also cooler and just as I mentioned earlier, the ECU tries to bring the O2 sensor's switching rate back up to standard. I would expound more on this if I wasn't feeling like a flu coming on. Sorry... HTH
