You are correct, any ODB-II reader will read the codes, but only the standard codes will return english descriptions, the rest will return the numbers. further I believe that the TECH-II will do a more through job of explaining the issue, as it does boot to specific software with the information in it. That 32mb pcmcia card that you boot to, I have two different ones for Saabs, and another for GM. There are manufacturer specific codes that will only return a code number (because it's something not in the generic lookup table, and I'm pretty sure (but Anders can keep me honest on this part) that the TECH-II will reset codes that may, or may not, be resetable with the generic reader. I'm sure that as time passes that the software available to run on your lapto PC will get better and more fully featured, and hopefully the stuff on the cars stays the same for long enough for the software to get inexpensive enough for all of us to get and use it.
However in the mean time, free is free and give it a shot, you may fix it or at least get the right information about the issue, ya know?
