I, too, run conventional oil (Castrol GTX), and change it and the filter regularly and frequently (3K-4K miles). Yes, synthetic oil doesn't break down as easily. However, I like changing the oil frequently, because when it drains out, a bunch of crud, dirt, corrosion products, etc., drain out with it. I'm pretty easy on the oil, so conventional oil doesn't get a chance to break down (much).
I'd rather change it more often. Yes, I dispose of it responsibly. My town collects engine oil and recycles it. Nice.
As to the oil weight, I'd stick with 10W-30 - that's what Saab recommends. 5W and especially 0W are much thinner - those oils tend to be specified to reduce drag and improve gas milage. The trade-off with thinner oil are certain compromises in lubricity and load bearing; I'll take the (very slight) gas milage hit. You'll see 5W and 0W on newer cars, mostly for the gas milage.
Stick with 10W-30.
However, I have absolutely no problem with synthetic oils, or even thin synthetic (such as 5W) - for engines that specify it. There are (at least) two strategies - run conventional oil and change it frequently, or use synthetic oil and change it less often. And the spectrum in-between with semi-synthetic. Or go nuts, and use synthetic and replace it often. Your choice.
Let the wars begin!
