Well to sum it up in 3 words, I loved it! They have a beautiful interior, run fast and an excellent ride The only reason I don't have it anymore is because I was involved in an accident were someone else hit me, insurance didn't reimburse enough to buy another one and I needed the money for other things.

The horror stories, if you find one that has been maintained, they are like any other car. I wouldn't buy an earlier year than '95, 840 that is,and the next one I get will be a '96 as it has the 4.4 V-8 engine as opposed to the 4.0 in the '95s and earlier. On some of the 4.0 be careful not to buy the one that has a nikasil block, the revised block is of an alusil metal. Something about the high sulfur content in N/A gas that would basically wear the engine and you get a lot of blow-by. Supposedly the sulfur content is low now and would not affect those engines now. If you got one with a nikasil block, highly suggested to get a compression test, if that comes out ok you should be fine.

I changed a lot of the gaskets on it VC, valley pan, FI o-rings and a bunch of other stuff but all for the sake of PM. When I first saw the engine I was somewhat perplexed but with the help of the guys on Roadfly it was A LOT easier. Like I said in my post, true enthusiasts, a lot more knowledgable than the BMW mechs at the stealers.

I had mine chipped, stock speed is 155, chipped about 180, I had already ordered custom sway bars front and back, Bilsteins/H&R's, but.... that happened and... The fastest I had it was like 135. I was already cruising at 85 on a test drive, floored it and I was surprised it kicked down and I was at 135 before I even knew it. I was like Speed Racer when he found himself in difficult situations saying OOOHHHH OOOOHHHH OOOHHH, if you know what I mean. Smooth as silk. Quiet to. At 90 the windows raise automatically for the aerodynamics and to keep the cabin quiet. Cool feature.

I would not hesitate to buy another one, I am going to get another one. Very rare car, many people don't even know it's a BMW and when they see the badge, they think it's some kind of concept car. Very unique, I understand your lust. When I first saw it I was like "WHAT KIND OF CAR IS THAT??!?!?!?!?" until I saw the badge, looked it up, and then I made it mine.

So, if you like it, get one, I would, in a heartbeat. Follow the recommendations from the guys on Roadfly and you'll be alright, There's a checklist that some of the guys made up as a pre-purchase checklist on what to look for or what to pass up. Prices are low on them now, approx 15-20K for a decent one. I think below that price threshold you might be picking up some problems. Yes there are horror stories, they can be somewhat "sensitive" so shop around and be patient. But I can guarantee you'll be happy with it once you get one.

The 840's are the V-8 versions, the 850 is the V-12 with the 850csi as the marquee of the model with the M tuning. The 850csi are still pricey running as high as 60 grand, even now. But those are truly rare as they only brought them into the US in '94 and '95. I was going to get the base V-12, 850ci, but mileage is something like 10-12mpg, the V-8 got something like 16-18. On the V-12's basically it's 2 engines combined so there are double parts. BMW took 2 slanted 6's and glued them together.

My second long post? If you have any questions let me know, I love these cars, and still lust after it myself.
