I guess I hadn't realized that that could happen. I replaced the idler and tensioner pulleys both times using this method and the tensioner has been fine ever since. Sometimes ignorance is bliss...
Although I concede that I probably was being a bit lazy and should have just fabricated a tool, which wouldn't have taken long at all.
