Counterclockwise? Posted by sam96CS [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Exactly as you described, Bill Homer ![]() |
I guess it depends on where you are when you turn the tie rod. The tie rod end screws on clockwise, which I think is the equivalent of holding the tie rod end still while turning the tie rod counterclockwise. Counterclockwise turns of the tie rod (facing the tie rod from the wheel well) makes the the length shorter. Right?
I like the idea of making an index mark before tweaking!
My laser measure says the distance between my front tires (distance from inner sidewall to inner sidewall where they bulge the most) is 1.315m at the front and 1.316~1.317m at the rear, so I have between 1.0 and 2.0 mm toe in (crudely estimated). The car drives like the toe is in - goes straight, "returns to zero" and doesn't make me work the steering wheel much.
Two things bother me. First, the steering wheel is turned about 10 degrees to the left of level when going straight. That's how it was before installing new ball joints and tie rod ends. Second, the number of tie rod end turns on the driver side (18) is 2-1/2 more than on the passenger side (15-1/2 turns). The difference in length is 1/8" (passenger side length is 1/8" greater). Maybe the steering rack isn't exactly centered.
Tire wear is normal, all 4 tires. My next (and probably final) suspension chore will be Bilstein HD shocks and new bushings in the ends of the rear anti sway bar. I have a local alignment shop with a good reputation that specializes in Volvos, Saabs and Hondas. I think I'll let them sort it out.
