that really counts for the drivability, as you can turn the steering wheel a bit to counteract the difference. Of course it does matter in setting where the steering wheel is pointed.
I like the laser pointers and distance measurement ideas. In the past I have used a steel tape measure and some tacks in the tread: measure the front separation, roll it, measure the back, compute the difference. Not exactly precision measurements, but not too far from what my indy does either.
