Fascinating thread and lots of interesting experiences. Here's my 2c worth.
My current 93 Aero is one of the best cars I've ever owned - outstanding performance, comfort, versatilty, safety, sense of security and build quality (with a few exceptions). What's more, I paid only $17K CDN (about $11k US) two years ago. By any standards, the performance and smile quotient represent amazing value for money. However, I don't find it as "involving" to drive as previous 3 and 5 series BMWs. And despite the high cost of BMW parts, they were much simpler to work on than the SAAB.
When its time to replace the Aero I think an Audi S4 will be top of my list. The current SAAB new car range just doesn't appeal.
On older car values, I've become well acquainted with the "beater" category favoured by my two sons. Their experience suggests you can run an older Volvo, Mazda or Toyota for next to nothing, providing you stay on top of regular maintenance. A Toyota Tercel wagon with 300,000 kms was in great shape for its age when sold (we did replace a tranny - a real SOB to get back in), an 82 Volvo wagon used by my son for his painting business had well over 300k when sold for the same amount he paid a year earlier (including an interesting paint job as a result of numerous spills) and a current 85 Mazda GLC looks like it will be another model of reliability for next to no money. We looked at older SAABs too but couldn't find any that were really well cared for - most needed major $$. I guess the good ones stay in the family for a long time.
