Exactly as much as someone will pay for it Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: what's a car worth?, nt moore, Sat, 29 Dec 2001 23:43:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If a car is selling at a price, then there is a group that thinks it's worth it. Is a Bentley worth $325,000? Apparently it is to enough people that Bentley is still around (OK, they've gone out of business about three dozen times, but they're still around...)
I love Saabs, but I don't think they're the only car anyone should ever drive. And I feel absolutely no need to convince someone that they are the 'best'.
But, since the gauntlet has been tossed down...
Why would I spend an extra $10K for a 9-3 over an Elantra (probably more than 10K to get it)...
First off, my guess is that the Saab will still be running at 150K miles. I doubt the same can be said for the Hyundai. Yes, it comes with a 10 year, 100K powertrain warrantee. If you remember a few years back, Hyundai had probably the worst reputation in terms of reliability. One way to buy that perception off is to give a great warrantee. Does that mean the car will last trouble-free for 100K miles? I doubt it. It means that the car company will eat the cost of repairing it up to 100K miles. Now, while that may insulate me from repair costs, I'm not keen to have a car that needs the shop all the time, even if someone else is picking up the tab. And once 100K is passed, any repair is on you.
Saabs have shown a long track record of lasting well into the upper 100K range and beyond. Hyundai has yet to do that. Now, if you sell the car sooner than that, it's not an issue.
I'll tell you one, very big reason why I would pick a Saab over a Hyundai and pay the extra. Saabs have a long track record (there it is again) of real world safety. Fatality statistics, insurance institute numbers, and personal experience say that if you're going to hit something, hit it in a Saab. I don't see those same numbers associated with the lower-priced Asian brands, an not even with the higher-priced ones, either. Yes, a Saab may cost more than a Hyundai, and not be as reliable as a Honda, but if some goat-roper in a SUV misses a red light because his cell phone is jammed in his cup holder, as that gleaming bumper bears down on you, will you think "Gee, I saved $10K!"
