I must ask first: What exactly did it sound like? Was it a metalic rattle? Was it a bang-bang-bang rattle, or a very quick vibration like kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk (like its almost a grinding)? Once these are answered I could go further. . . but!>>>>
If it is kind of a slow rattle, like a clunking, it could be that the adjuster screw on the distributor has come loose and the rotation of the engine twisted the whole distributor so the timing advanced WAY to far. Although this would cause a blown piston, it could be a possiblity and did it so quick that no damage was done. The clunk/rattle would've been the piston hitting the explosion part way up the cylinder (basically mechanical detonation). I'm having trouble with this on my put-put now.
