First, I would not agree that these engines are prone to seizure - that's one of those myths that surround the cars.
Secondly - what you describe, the "marbles in a can sound" - kind of sounds like it could be clutch related. How much play did you have in your clutch? I'm thinking "overheated and thus collapsed release bearing".
