Will the engine turn at all? In neutral turn the crank pulley by hand, or with free wheel out rock the car in gear and see if the engine will turn over. You could pull distributor and look at gear, but not likely source of problem. If the engine won't turn its not much sense to pull head before pulling engine as the crank is the problem. If engine is in good shape and only crank bearing seized, you might get by with a rebuilt crank and rods assembly.
Rattle could have been bearings on crank before they seized up.
