I use the same alternator in 2 different V4 cars and they act exactly the same way except they come on around 2k rpm. I have a voltmeter in one of the cars and you can watch it bounce right up as you slowly bring the rpm's up after starting. No big deal really. I've always figured it's a glitch in the 900 alternator that I'll just live with to get the extra amps to see in the dark.
If things are dull and slow before the alternator kicks in you might want to have the battery tested to make sure it's still putting out good juice. Winter is here and where I live nothing is more of a bummer than hearing the click click of the starter solenoid trying to turn the motor over on a weak battery when it's 5 below.
