Jonathan,
You're making me think of something- I have a 1949 Ford 8N tractor that I converted from 6VDC to 12VDC. This conversion is quite simple and common, and mainly consists of changing the generator over to a one-wire alternator (regulator inside the alternator, similar to the 900). I don't have a voltmeter on the tractor, but I do have an ammeter. When I start it, the ammeter shows 0 amps (or charge). Then I have to bring the throttle up to probably half and the ammeter will suddenly jump up to say 20 amps charge depending on the battery condition. I can then drop the throttle back to idle and it will still charge. It seems it has to get over a threshold. Maybe this is how the "one wire" 900 alternator works. I'll have to do some research on this to figure out what's happening. I vaguely recall something in one of my motors/generators courses in college about the field having to charge... but that's a long time ago.
