If you don't have the left gauge, am I right in thinking you don't have an alternator warning light? That could be the source of your problem. Try wiring one up temporarily and see if the problem goes away. Any 12V incandescent bulb will work -- you can use your test light, or a 12V pilot lamp from Radio Shack, or even a spare turn signal bulb. (Don't use an LED, though.) Anything like that should work. The warning light circuit also energizes the field windings on the alternator, so it can begin producing power. Without that initial bootstrap current it will have only a weak residual magnetic field at first and won't produce any output to speak of.
