Any increase in MPGs will be from reduced friction. There is more to friction that viscosity. Diesel engine oils can have higher levels of friction modifier addatives which work in very thin fluid films where there is more going on than fluid shear losses. The oil films are very thin on camshaft followers and piston rings. A thicker oil may be able to make some thin film action areas act more like a thick oil film and change the equation there. 15Wxx oils may be creating losses during warm up, but of MPGs are monitors fully warmed up at speed with SID resets, then warmup is out of the equation. Some synthetic oils do decrease friction significantly and this is well documented. Dyno based and group III diesel oils may offer good wear protection but might not have any MPG advanages at all. Delvac 1 is synthetic, Delvac 1300 and others are not synthetic.
I notices the Delvac 1 difference on a mature 95SET engine. The engine felt stronger too. And when it also runs smoother and quieter, that also has some seriously good implications.
