Hi tinjo4,
These benefits apply to all engines. As mentioned, oils with thinner cold-temp-weights will offer better fuel savings during the most inefficient period - before the engine has warmed up to full operating temperature. Also, keep in mind that Saab engineeers have generally recommended oils for their engines that are slightly heavier at hot operating temps. Synthetics offer benefits in both of these situations. That is, they both flow better when they're cold & thin less when they're hot.
The oil film covering moving parts is the best protection against wear. Oil makers also add compounds which provide protection when the oil film gets pushed away. These compounds are better than metal-to-metal contact, but not as good as a film of oil. To keep the oil in place as long as possible, you need a more durable film of oil. Slightly heavier oils with improved test ratings will provide this stronger film. The European ACEA ratings take this into account (US API ratings don't), with A1 being the weakest & A3 being the strongest. (A5 was created later, & falls in-between those two.) Here again, synthetics offer benefits over conventional ("dino", short for "dinosaur") oil, as their molecular structures allows them to spread & cling better to metal surfaces.
For a non-turbo Saab engine, I feel the Mobil 1 0W-40 is an ideal oil. Quicker flow to moving parts when you first start up a cold engine, & a more durable oil film at hot operating temperatures.
