This is too much of a blanket statement. There are some "conventional" 10W-40 oils that are excellent in some engines. They are a blend of high-VI Group-II and Group-III oils. Low-cost Group I oil, 10W-40, should be avoided, but 10W-40 would be especially bad due to high amount of VI-improvers.
Pre-2003 SAAB engines should only be filled with ACEA A3 rated oils. Synthetic or otherwise. The new GM aluminum-block engine oils should all have GM-LL-A-025 approval.
