Are Saabs reliable? Are they expensive to own/fix?

Hey there. I want to get 1 1997 Saab 900 SE Turbo this year. I think you get a great car for about $5K. Not to mention the look of the Saab has really grown on me ( '96+ ). But it seems like everytime I tell someone that I want to get a Saab, they say, "Ohh should not get one of those. They cost as much to fix as a BMW and they are really unreliable." So finally getting tired of everybody telling me the object of my desire SUCKS, I made some phone calls. I was fortunately enough to talk to what sounded like a very knowledgable mechanic who said that the engines are good to around 300,000 miles if well maintained (change the oil and stuff) and the Turbos are good for abour 180,000 miles.
So what is the honest truth about the Saab? Do the die hard cult fallowing folks like it because it does not look like all the same boring crap out there or because it ids actually a good cheap (if you get one used) reliable car, or both? Below is an image of my current car (rare 1987 Mazda 323 Station Wagon). She is UGLY but runs well. The paint is very sun burnt from it's life in Arizona. I am living in Northern California now.
