I bought my 1997 900s new in October 1997, and, other than routine maintenance, I have had it in the shop a grand total of ONE TIME! A pulley melted from the heat (I was living in Texas at the time), and this caused the fan belt to jump out of it's groove and get cut. Total to replace the pulley and drive belt was about $300. I would say they are definitely reliable if you maintain them properly!
Also, because Saabs considered very safe cars, auto insurance is fairly reasonable. When I bought my 900s, I traded in a car valued at approximately $3000 (a Nissan 240/sx) for my $30000 Saab, and my premium increased by only $60.
