The trick with the chamois leather is to first soak it in a bucket of water for a few minutes. After it has gone soft, open it up and flap it about in the bucket. This dislodges any small particles. Repeat this flapping process after using it to wipe every panel on your car.
To dry without streaks, drag the chamois leather fully opened over the wet car. You might have to do this twice over the same area.
I found this to be the only way to have a streakless shine, and no scrathes. But I agree with John that caution must be used with darker colours. Metallic paint tend to be better in avoiding scrathes from my experience.
