Retail.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How best to "fight" the insurance appraisal?, Eiron, Thu, 1 Jan 2009 11:28:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm dubious of maintenance receipts and upgrades. If you spend $5,000 upgrading a $5,000 car, it's still basically only worth $5,000. Generally speaking a stock unmodified car is worth as much or more as one that has been "upgraded".
Similar situation with maintenance. If you spend $5,000 putting an engine or whatever into a high mile $3,000 car you don't get $8,000 or $5,000 or much more than the $3,000 the car is worth.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but from a dealers perspective when someone's car is totaled that's good news for the customer because insurance companies pay "retail" or considerably more than what a dealer would appraise the car for in trade or "wholesale".
I'm curious about the specifics, year, model, miles and what maintenance and upgrades you're trying to recoup.
